Just Chill

The past 2 days have been pretty stressful. Not bad at all, just stressful.

I’m sharing with you the image I use to relax. It reminds me of why I’m living in Cancun (beach weekends) and what my professional goals are (7-day beach weekends).

I use this image (taken on Holbox island) as my cell phone screen saver.

What relaxes you?

Getting Used to Solo Adventures

I’m a little sad lately.

Jorge graduated university in December, and he started his first job in early April, which is very exciting! He works the morning shift, so he’s always home in the evenings when I get back from work. We still get to see eachother a lot, which I’m very grateful for.

The downside? Jorge works weekends. Our fabulous weekends traveling to places like Holbox, Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres are over, at least for the next few years. Since his shift starts at 7 am, we can’t stay out late on Friday and Saturday nights anymore. Well I can… he can’t 😛

As passionate as I am about tourism… tourism never sleeps. Employees in Mexico’s travel industry typically only get 1 day off a week (sometimes no days during high season), and it rarely falls on a weekend.

So what have I been doing with my weekends without Jorge?

  • Intense Saturdays at the gym
  • Church every Sunday
  • Running Sunday afternoon
  • Lots of TV

Not bad, but I really miss my adventures.

Last week I got so frustrated that I just went to the beach myself, something I’d never done before. My next stop was Surfin Burrito (because you can’t go into the Hotel Zone without a little somethin somethin from Surfin Burrito). Spending a day with myself wasn’t half bad, but I really did miss Jorge.

Some pics from my solo trip to Forum Beach in Cancun’s Hotel Zone:

I’d love to turn to my friends for some fun weekends, but most of them are married/have a boyfriend, so it’s hard to convince them to have a girls’ day. My amazing single friends mostly work weekends.

Feeling a little lonely.

Do ya’ll have any other great ideas for solo weekend adventures?

Yet Another Playa Weekend

So excited! Today after work we’re leaving for a short weekend in Playa del Carmen. The company my friend works for has a currently empty 2-bedroom apartment there, so we’re going to enjoy a couple’s weekend. It’s going to be chilly, but fun! Hope your weekend is awesome, too.

My Three Day Weekend

So my 3-day weekend for Mexican Independence Day was busy, busy, busy! I’ll do a quick run-through for ya 🙂

Thursday

To celebrate Independence Day, we played it simple this year… tacos and potatoes at a friend’s pool. Just a calm evening sitting around and talking while listening to fireworks in the distance. Ended the night around 5 am, I think.

We really need to hang out with this group of friends more often. They’re friends of Jorge from high school, and we always have a great time with them.

Friday

Also a low-key day. We ordered the plants we want for the backyard, then went to Jorge’s cousin’s 3rd birthday party where we had tortas and raspados. Then we went home and took a long nap!

In the evening, we went to my suegros house for some pasta from Cheester.

Me and Jorge at Sofia's bday party

Saturday

My brother-in-law scored a dozen free passes to Xcaret. Since Jorge’s cousins were in town visiting, we went with them for the day. I’ll do a more detailed post later this week, but here’s a teaser photo for ya…

Sunday

On Sunday morning, we (and by “we”, I mean Jorge) planted some mini palm trees in our up-and-coming backyard, and laid some some dirt. I’ll post the full makeover later this week, so you can check out our little patio, palm trees, fancy grass and orchid (whaaaaat??)!

Here’s a preview shot of Jorge hard at work while I supervised (and by “supervised”, I mean ate cereal, took pictures, played with the dogs and decided where the palm trees should go).

I think we can all agree that Jorge is the best husband ever.

The grass and orchid plant came today, but won’t be installed until tomorrow. Boo.

Immediately afterwards, my suegros came and picked us up to go to the pool. My brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s parents (confusing, I know) own a piece of land out in the middle of the jungle where they’ve built a little private pool and garden, complete with hammock area and bathroom. We spent the rest of the afternoon there. I would have taken pictures, but I was too busy swimming, eating Domino’s pizza and napping in hammocks. Life is so hard sometimes.

Afterwards we did laundry at my suegros house, like we do every Sunday. Meanwhile, I caught up on reality TV online… Project Runway, new season of Survivor (hurray!) and America’s Next Top Model All Stars (go Allison and Laura!). Then Jorge and I went home and watched the first episode of Jersey Shore Italy. (Oh Mike, you scoundrel!)

So that’s it for my 3-day weekend. What did you do this weekend?

Vegas Weekend Part 1

I’m back from Vegas! I have a cold and started 10 hours of travel at 6 am yesterday (Pacific Time), and today I just wanna curl up and sleep… but somehow I managed to make it in to work today. That means ya’ll get to enjoy some Vegas pictures 🙂

We spent most of our time at Caesar’s Palace. My sister Sarah and I stayed the last 2 nights at Imperial Palace across the street, but anyone who’s been there knows it’s not picture-worthy. We really only went there to sleep. (It does have a great location, though!)

I didn’t take too many because I was trying to just enjoy the moment most of the time… but I got some cool ones.

Here goes:

View from my lounge chair at the pool

Gringation by the fountain in the Caesars Palace lobby

My lovely sister Sarah

Casino at Caesar's (love that ceiling!)

The Forum Shops and Caesars... Sarah and I were taking the "Poor Man's Tour of Las Vegas", so we just walked around and longingly stared into store windows. Good times 🙂

Beijing Noodle No. 9 at Caesar's Palace... crazy looking!

My Belgian waffle with fresh fruit at Augustus Cafe...

...and the butter and syrup to go on top of it.

The New York New York hotel

Yours truly out and about in Vegas

Mandalay Bay... probably my favorite hotel we went into. Miles and miles of restaurants & casinos... not to mention an aquarium and a lazy river! Seriously, the pool area was like a water park!

Lunch with the family at Raffles restaurant at Mandalay Bay

Walking under a sleeping lioness at the MGM

The Centrifuge at MGM

My favorite part was probably the view from my sister Noelle’s room at Caesar’s Palace. Got to enjoy this every day…

Day

Night (Bellagio Fountains!!!)

My overall thoughts:

As a Hotel Management major, I was in Heaven. These places are INCREDIBLE! I heard a guy at the airport say, “Vegas is like DisneyWorld for adults… pure fantasy.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

The food was expensive… but amazing.

I did a few hours of gambling at Caesar’s on Saturday night with my sisters and lost 10 bucks. It was worth it 🙂 I followed the rule that you shouldn’t gamble more than you’d want to spend, so I think I did pretty well!

I’m so glad I got to experience it! I can certainly see why people would go there… but personally I’d prefer something much more relaxing if I could go on vacation.

Tomorrow: Pictures of my sister’s wedding! It was AWESOME.
