Weight Loss Before and After: Part 3

Sadly, only 1 pound lost and no noticeable changes since my last weight loss update. Now I’m down to 134 pounds.

Here’s what happened: When my family was here in late May, I missed 2 weeks at the gym. Despite all of our dinners in Playa del Carmen, I was proud that I was still able to control my portions. My nutritionist was a bit disappointed that I only lost 1 pound at my weigh-in, but I am thrilled that I didn’t gain any weight with little exercise and all that temptation (including a day at an All Inclusive resort)!

There was even a 5-layer chocolate fudge cake at work that I didn’t eat! I even cut slices for everyone in the office and had it sitting within my line of sight the entire work day. So, so proud.

My goal is to lose 1.2 kilos (2.6 pounds) in 2 weeks (by this Friday), which would get me down to 60 kilos! (132 pounds) It doesn’t sound like much, but when you get down to the last few pounds, it gets harder and harder to let go of the weight.

Now that I’ve got the diet and temptation part down, I need to pick up the pace at the gym. I don’t want to fall into the “skinny fat” category, so it’s time to work on my tone. It’s already gotten so much better in just a few months, but this gringa’s got a long way to go!

To keep me motivated, here are some more before and after pics so you can see the difference in my face:

Before - 160 pounds

After - 134 pounds

What’s the biggest food temptation you’ve ever resisted?

Well, here I am, 5 months into my weight loss journey. First off, I was wrong. Turns out my goal is actually 128 pounds instead of 130 pounds (this is what happens when you live in a country that uses kilos). No biggie, 2 more pounds than I thought.

As you may remember, I started at 160 pounds back in mid-December. The entire month of April was a huge plateau, and I couldn’t manage to get below 140 pounds for the life of me.

2 weeks ago I decided to switch gyms so I could do more cardio and some weight training, as several friends recommended. The exercise switch seemed to get me over that plateau, and I’m finally down to 135 pounds! Just 7 pounds to go for this gringa.

Here go the before and after pictures (please pardon the sweat and red face, I had just gotten back from the gym):

Before: 160 pounds in November 2011

After: 135 pounds in May 2012

And from the side… check out the difference in the arms!

Before: October 2010 160 pounds

After: May 2012 135 pounds

So proud, and so close to my goal.

The weight training has been challenging because I’ve never lifted a weight in my life. On some of the arm curl machines, I can barely make it through 15 reps with just the machine (no weights). Pathetic, but ya gotta start somewhere!

I was really proud last week when I did 8 minutes jogging on the treadmill. I don’t think I’ve ever jogged for more than 3 minutes, so that was a huge deal to me.

The diet is a breeze now, except for the occasional soda. Oops.

On the downside, my leggings no longer fit me as of last week. This means that the only clothes I have left are dresses. Just a few more weeks til I can buy some skinny jeans and SHORTS! Oh my gosh, I haven’t worn shorts in years.

A Farewell Letter to Some Loyal Friends

Dear New Balances,

Friday was a sad day for us. We left the gym and were welcomed by a vibrant sunset. With a refreshing high off of our energetic workout, we set out to the main road to briskly walk through sidewalks, gravel, dirt and waist-high plants on our usual walk home. Just as we left the parking lot, tragedy struck. I felt myself step on something large under my left foot. I looked down, and your sole had bended backwards and was hanging loosely off.

Sorry, I can't stand up without the dogs immediately gathering around.

Unsure of what to do, I continued walking, lifting my left foot high in the air with every step, hoping it was dark enough that the people in the passing cars wouldn’t notice me half goose-stepping my way down the road. After a difficult 20-minute walk, we made it home. You helped me with one final adventure as I tried to clean the flooded kitchen with a broken squeegee (note to self: buy functioning floor squeegee), then we walked upstairs and I kicked you off my feet one last time.

Ten years. You’ve seen me through high school gym classes, mission trips to Belize and Acapulco, my move to Mexico, and countless trips to the gym. You’ve had your soles super-glued back on, and still managed to look almost new. Sadly, it seems our time has come to an end.

I bought some new shoes yesterday. They’re lovely, but not quite the same. Maybe in time, I’ll feel the same bond and magic as I did with you.

They're Nikes. I hope you're not offended.

We had a nice run. (pun intended)

Love always,

Laura

Just Thursday

Just Thursday again! If you want to join in, link up at Murdock’s Mama:

Outside my window.. 84 degrees and very, very sunny!
Today I feel.. productive and excited because we’re having birthday cake in the office today!
I am thankful.. that I get to eat lunch outdoors every day.
Tomorrow I am going.. to work, then the gym, then who knows?
I am wearing.. my work uniform.
I wish.. cute purses were less expensive. I really need 2 (I’ve only bought 1 in the last 3 years!)
This weekend.. I was invited to go to a luxurious All Inclusive resort, only $800 pesos (about $70 US) per person per night! But we’re saving up for some other stuff right now, so Jorge and I will probably just try to do something cool on our own here in Cancun.
I am reading.. I finished the Millenium series (WOW! Am I right?) and now I’m back to The Ugly American, which I never finished.
I am working on.. translating a press release (not nearly as exciting as it sounds)
Yesterday I.. went to work, went to the gym, then hung out around the house all evening
I am hoping.. to lose weight soon! I was doing so well, then I fell off the wagon this month. I went to the gym consistently, but Nutella, Starbucks cinnamon rolls and quesadillas seem to have caused my downfall. No weight lost in the last month and a half. Time to really get serious about the diet! Good news is that I have much more endurance and strength than I did a few weeks ago.
I am hearing.. someone in the office sneezing.
I bet you don’t know.. that my dogs actually hate eachother. They all love Jorge and me to the point of obsession… but for the most part they ignore eachother. There’s also frequent territorial growling. Why can’t I be one of those owners whose dogs cuddle and stuff?
One of my favorite.. places is Playa del Carmen.

How to Speak Like a Mexicano: "Streep Dancing"

Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve done a “How to Speak like a Mexicano” post!!

A pretty well-known local gym uses this to advertise its classes:

In case you couldn’t figure it out, this gym offers stripping classes.

Here in Mexico, the word for stripper is “stripper”. (I love how they choose English to describe the more vulgar and shallow things in life. Very smart on their part.)

However, with Spanish pronunciation, the word is pronounced more like “eh-STREE-per”. Since they use the long “ee” sound to pronounce it here in Mexico, I guess the owners of this gym assumed strip was spelled with a “ee”. Good intentions. Bad follow-through.

Once in Acapulco, I saw it advertised as “strep dancing”. Kudos on getting closer to the correct pronunciation… but naming a dance after an illness is definitely not sexy.

Can you spot the other mistake on this ad?

Also… can anyone tell me what “gap” is?
