Travel Safety in Mexico vs USA

I recently read an amazing article that talks about a topic very near and dear to my heart: the safety of Mexico.

The US, Canada and beyond have been flooded with news stories on violence in this country, even though expats and travelers to Mexico have seen with their own eyes that just like any other country, the violence is reduced to certain people and certain areas.

The Lonely Planet article mentioned cites numerous statistics comparing Mexican travel destinations to US travel destinations… and the results are quite surprising.

Next time someone tells you Mexico is dangerous, show them this Lonely Planet post.

  1. Thanks for sharing that Laura. I still feel horrible about not making the trip out to see you when I had the chance. I shouldn’t have listened to the naysayers around me. I feel like I really missed out. šŸ™ Hopefully there’ll be another opportunity because you live in a truly gorgeous part of the world. šŸ™‚

    • Julie, I often wonder how I’d see Mexico if I were still living in the US. I’m pretty sure I’d be worried to travel there, as well, if I weren’t familiar with it. When that’s all you see on the news, what else can you believe?

Next time you’re around, I’ll take you off the resort šŸ™‚

  2. Ditto! Ditto! Ditto! I don’t think twice about walking around my beautiful Playa del Carmen at night. I have never felt like my safety was at risk. I’m not so sure I can say that about my old suburban middle class neighborhood in the US.

  3. People are so STUPID. Obviously ANYWHERE you are you need to be careful. It’s when people do stupid things that bad things happen. Mexico is a BEAUTIFUL place and it makes me angry when people act like it’s some horrible place that no one should go to.

  4. Thanks for sharing this, Laura. It drives me CRAZY when people who have spent little to no time in Mexico go on and on about how “dangerous” it is. You need to use your common sense anywhere in the world – and Mexico is no different. Mexico is a very beautiful country and it’s very sad to see how it gets portrayed in the mainstream media.

    Thanks again!!
