Pinches Chaquistes

Having tons of bugbites on your feet when you’re too ticklish to properly scratch them is the worst feeling in the world.

Didn’t get much sleep last night.

(Life is sooooo haaaaaard!)

Luckily I brought Vitacilina with me to work today, which has been a lifesaver. If you don’t know what Vitacilina is… you have never watched a Mexican morning show.

**Positive note: Itchy-scratchiness is from pesky chaquiste bites while enjoying my best friend’s awesome beach wedding… so maybe I’m whining too much. Will hopefully post photos later this week. :)

  • Andantol is also a great after-bite remedy!

Why do bugs bite in Puerto Juarez? They are out in full force. I always get bites there. And I love to eat at Mandinga’s.

  • Beach wedding?! Toughen up woman, those are warrior bites! ;)

  • Vitacilina has been my best friend since I have been here!

  • I love Vitalicina! I always have some in my medicine cabinet along with Vaporub, which is also really great at relieving itchyness from pesky insect bites! :P

  • Ok, I just had to look that up- it sounds like a wonder ointment! I have strangely managed to avoid bug bites this year, but I’m camping next week, so I’m sure I’ll get my fill then :(

  • Ouch.

My mum and her coworkers are currently getting bitten to death in their temporary work space. They’re sure the carpet has fleas or something because they’re all covered in bites too. Eek.

  • Are chaquistes like little gnats or mosquitoes?

Chaquistes are called no-seeums in English. They are the biting midge fly and very very tiny. They can go through regular window screens easily. Lots of people are allergic to the bites which start as a small red spot then blister, then itch for up to a week. I have lived in Mexico for four years and I am constantly fighting them. long sleeve shirts and long pants prevent the bites but you also need to wear two pairs of socks because they can get through the fabric of one pair of socks and still bite. DEET based repellant like “deep woods Off” does keep them away and after bites you have to use cortisone creams or in very severe cases use ices cubes to reduce swelling. I hate these insects more than mosquitoes because the itching last so long.
