Cancun Winters

Turns out that over the last 2 weeks or so, Cancun has had a few record-breaking low temperatures.

The days have been beautiful, usually in the 70s with a cool breeze and lots of sunshine. (I wish it were like this all year!) At night, however, it has gotten down to 50 degrees. I know those of you who have been experiencing blizzards and snowstorms this winter are probably saying “What are you complaining about?” but hear me out…

-Houses in Cancun have no heating system.

-Houses in Cancun are made of concrete, which is designed to make things cooler.

-Houses in Cancun usually have all-tile floor. Great for the heat, but not too cozy for 50-degree weather.

-Windows and doors in Cancun aren’t usually airtight, letting in a bit of the cold.

So what does this mean? We have basically been sleeping in 50 degree temperatures.

I love it sometimes, so long as I have good blankets and PJs. We borrowed 2 fleece blankets from my brother-in-law yesterday. I grew up sleeping under heavy blankets and comforters, and I think it’s the best way to sleep! Jorge, however, is having a difficult time with the cold. This is a guy who sleeps at most with a thin blanket… although usually he will sleep on top of the covers or in a hammock.

The dogs usually sprawl out on the tile floor to stay cool while they sleep. Lately they’ve been making use of their doggie beds to cuddle up from the cold. Yesterday I washed the doggie beds and they hadn’t dried, so last night we had to improvise. Suki slept on my laptop bag by my side of the bed (her favorite spot). Dolly snuggled up with one of Jorge’s old t-shirts under the bed. Konan used a doggie bed cushion (the only part that had dried by then) under the bed, as well. I would love to shave their fur to keep them cleaner, but with this weather that won’t be an option until March or April.

The upside is that I’ve been thoroughly enjoying some Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate from Starbucks, we’ll save a ton on the electric bill by not using the AC, and I get the chance to wear my cute jackets, scarves and long-sleeved shirts that spend all year in my closet. Plus it feels more like Christmas!

How cold is it where you are?

  1. We have been enjoying the cooler weather as well. We have taken out our slippers and duvet from storage. Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate from Starbucks sounds heavenly I must go try one this week

  2. it’s -2° right now. Yes, that’s 2° BELOW zero. Don’t even get me started on wind chills!

Sorry it’s chilly where you are. For a place that is supposed to be warm all year, it must really suck!

  3. Man, what a nice change of pace for you! But difficult to get used to, I’m sure.

We’ve not had too cold of a winter here so far. It gets into the 30s some nights, but this week even, we’re expecting a high of almost 80. It’s definitely no winter like I’ve ever seen… way warmer than usual.

  4. I’ll take 50 over our 10 degrees and the wind chill is minus 15. Damn cold! But, we only have 4 inches of snow! This is not my kind of weather. Keep warm amiga!

  5. I have to laugh. What a different world huh? I sleep with a down comforter in the summer too! I can’t imagine not having heat though, that must be rough. At least you have your honey to cuddle up to. And those little heater dogs would be in my bed pronto. Even if I just kicked mine out. I’m trying to be strong.

  6. OMG – we froze our butts off today! We left the beach early…sigh 🙂 Then I made comfort food for dinner. We have two heavy blankets on our bed now, and I’m wearing socks as I type this!! I leave for Calgary on Wednesday so this should be interesting!! Hahaha 🙂

    Stay warm amiga 🙂

  7. We are 14 degrees outside right now. *Sigh.*

I understand what you mean about the houses. In FL we really were not set up to handle the cold either, plus the local stores don’t sell much winter weather supplies either. If you can get your hands on a good (emphasis on good) space heater it will make for a worthy investment.

  8. It’s freezing here too! Mornings have been in the low to mid 30’s (Fahrenheit). One morning the temps dropped to 28. Brrrr! Hubby said we’d go heater shopping this week, but I think he forgot! 😛

  9. Love the postcard! Ha ha… If it helps, it’s butt freezing this week. We do have heaters at work, but unfortunately, the public areas like hallways and bathrooms aren’t heated to conserve energy. I hate having to go to the bathroom.

Unfortunately for you it’s so unpredicted. Glad you have ways of keeping warm and adding layers!

  10. You better warm that place up by the time I come visit next month! It’s friggin’ cold here. The temp out at the bus stop this morning clocked in at a balmy 13 degrees.
