Outside my window.. lots of sunshine!!

The time is.. 9:24 am
Today I feel.. still sleepy, even though I slept for 10 hours last night.
I am thinking.. about how weird and vivid some of my dreams were last night. Scared to go back to sleep hahaha
At the moment, I am thankful.. for kind strangers. Thanks to the lady who offered to give me a ride to work yesterday 🙂 You made my week.
I am going.. to get lots of work done today (hopefully)
I am wearing.. my work uniform.
I wish.. we had Target in Cancun. Maybe someday!

I am reading.. They Came to Baghdad by Agatha Christie
I am working on.. losing some weight! Yesterday was a great day, and today will hopefully be even better. I have a tupperware full of fruit calling my name right now! Canteloupe and pitaya… mmm…

I am hoping.. to get Monday AND Tuesday off (for Day of the Dead), but I’m not going to get my hopes up, either.

I am hearing.. the clicking of keyboards.
I bet you didn’t know.. that Jorge almost lost his eyebrows this week. Time to get a new water heater.
One of my favorite.. fruits is canteloupe!! I’ve been buying it every week lately.
Weekend Plans.. I have no idea. It all depends on how everything plays out with days off and whatnot. Here are a few possibilities of what might happen:

Throwing a Halloween party with some friends

Going out to  a nightclub or bar for Halloween

Going to Yucatan for the whole weekend to visit Jorge’s family for Day of the Dead

MishMash

I don’t have anything specific to blog about today, but there are some random things going on, so let’s get you guys caught up 🙂

First of all, I always get asked how married life is going. It’s great! Jorge cleans, we’re both learning to cook a bit (even though he’s happy eating Nesquik cereal every night), we watch a lot of Law and Order because it’s one of the few shows we can agree on, we rarely argue, when we DO argue it never lasts more than 5 minutes (living with someone is a big motivation to apologize quickly haha)… life is good! My only complaint is that Jorge has now gotten hooked on a new video game called Plants vs. Zombies. Plays this thing for 3 – 5 hours a day. Seriously.

The crate training with Konan is going well. She’ll usually go outside on her own now. We can go out at night with friends and leave her outside the crate and she won’t go inside. Last week, we left her outside the crate all day when we weren’t home. The first day was perfect. The second day… not so much. So back into the crate she went the next day. Still… we’re progressing!!

Easy Off Bam! should be kept far, far away from all clothing items. I lost a shirt yesterday 🙁

Calorie counting isn’t going as well this time as it did last time. I haven’t gone over my limit yet, which is good, but most days it’s not as low as it should be. I’m learning, though! Most important lesson: Don’t drink your calories! There are 250 calories in 500 ml of Coke… that’s the same as a light lunch!!

This is an exciting week in my favorite shows! Big Bang Theory is having a HILARIOUS 4th season, Glee did a Rocky Horror episode last night, New Zealand’s Next Top Model has its finale this week (go Danielle!), the Project Runway finale is tomorrow, and Survivor… well, Survivor is always interesting. Don’t tell me anything! I can’t watch any of it until this weekend!

Sofa Shopping in Cancun

Can’t remember if I mentioned this, but last Saturday (9 days ago) I won about $350 US playing the slot machines at a Cancun casino… not bad considering I only played $15!!

With that money, plus some money my grandparents had given us at the wedding in July, plus some extra cash I didn’t know I had in my debit account, Jorge and I decided to go ahead and buy a living room set.

This weekend, we went to a lot of local furniture stores to see what we could find.

Shopping for a couch in Cancun is not an easy task. I would say Cancun couches can be divided into five categories:

1. Rattan couches that can be kinda pretty, but the hard armrests make them uncomfortable for lounging. These can also be surprisingly expensive! If I had a sunroom or formal living room, I’d totally buy them… but not for watching TV.

2. Muebles Rusticos Any expat in Mexico who’s worth their salt knows what “rustic furniture” is… large, handmade wood furnishings, often with wrought iron details and unique carvings. Beautiful for dining room furniture, bedroom sets and cabinets, but it has a hard time translating well to living room furniture. It can be done well, but it’s never very comfortable. Very well-priced, and usually paired with brightly-colored patterns on the cushions.

3. Grandma furniture Decent lines, usually pretty comfortable, fairly inexpensive… but kinda horrendous. Hard to believe stores still sell these.

4. Chic and modern, but hard as a rock These couches look sleek, contemporary and attractive… but when you sit on them, they don’t give. At all. Usually harder than the muebles rusticos, to be honest. Very well priced, but I wouldn’t ever use them. That being said, they’re probably the most popular in Cancun right now. Usually made of leather or vinyl.

5. Modern yet cozy Something you can really sink into. These are usually found in higher-end department stores, and can cost quite a lot of money.

If you can find #5 at an inexpensive price, BUY IT. This is the Holy Grail of Mexican furniture.

Here’s what we ended up getting:

A friend of ours is selling us his 1-year-old living room set… modern, cute, and the most comfortable thing I’ve ever sat on.

A little large and overstuffed for my taste, but with 5 reclining seats at $9,000 pesos (about $700 US), I ain’t complainin!

The living room set comes with a couch for 3 (with 2 recliners), a loveseat (with 2 recliners) and an individual recliner.

So whenever you wanna watch TV and eat some popcorn… come on over to our house! Although you’ll probably fall asleep within the first 5 minutes…

20-Year-Old Student Becomes Police Chief

Most of you have probably heard about all the violence going down on the Mexico/US border, mostly related to drug wars. Luckily Cancun is far away from this area, but quite a few of my good friends live in border cities like Reynosa, Tijuana and Juarez.

I came across a very interesting piece of news this week. Here it is, copied from ThirdAge.com :

Marisol Valles Garcia is just a 20-year-old college student, but she is now the new police chief of Guadalupe, Mexico.

How did the criminology major get the job? Easy: no one else applied.

The once coveted position is now one of the most feared jobs to take on due to the drug cartels in Mexico. Public officials are increasingly becoming targets of the cartels, and many have fallen victim to assassination, including the former mayor of Guadalupe was slain in June.

“Before, it used to be an attractive job, living on the public payroll,” said Dante Haro of the University of Guadalajara. “Now being a town mayor is very difficult, not just because of the economic problems but also this issue of obedience to organized crime.”

The town has fallen victim to a brutal rivalry between notorious drug cartels. The gangs are fighting over the town’s one highway, a lucrative drug corridor that gives them access to Texas.

Garcia already has plans in store for the town: she wants to establish programs in the neighborhoods and schools in order to secure public spaces and to gain cooperation from the neighborhood.

So far, Garcia says, the people of Guadalupe have been very supportive.

Other plans are more controversial, however. She intends to use a largely female police force.

“We are simply going to talk with them, with the people, with the families, giving them confidence so they will quit being afraid, so they can leave their houses,” she told CNN en Español.

“We have hope that we are going to exchange fear for tranquility and security.”

Anyway, I think it’s sad that the situation is so bad, nobody else stepped up.  Still, she sounds like a very positive and brave person, and it will be interesting to see what she does.

What do you think about Marisol?

Just Thursday

It’s just Thursday! If you want to join in, go to Murdock’s Mama’s website to link up…

Abby from Murdock’s Mama is on vacation right now in the Riviera Maya! She’s soaking up the rays on the beach right at this moment, just one hour from where I sit in my cold, gray office. Blah.

Outside my window.. sunny, yet overcast… kinda weird, kinda cool. I really want hurricane season to end so all the massive clouds go away!

The time is.. 9:17 am
Today I feel.. halfway between wanting to kick butt at work and go home to sleep some more.
I am thinking.. that I always have the hardest time with this question. I think it’s because most of my thinking before 11 am is pretty robotic.
At the moment, I am thankful.. for great, cool weather because I can sleep with the AC off and the window wide open!
I am going.. to eat something yummy for lunch today! (fish tacos? empanadas? soup and salad? We’ll have to wait and see!)
I am wearing.. my work uniform BLAAAAH
I wish.. hurricane season would stop already! We already have another possible tropical depression on the way, due to arrive at the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday. I’m really hoping for a non-rainy weekend!
I am reading.. They Came to Baghdad by Agatha Christie
I am working on.. getting our finances together so we can save more each month.
I am hoping.. that my cold goes away soon. I’m in the coughing stage still… no fun!
I am hearing.. the hum of the AC at work.
I bet you didn’t know.. that Jorge went on a date with another woman last night!!! Ok, he went to see the new Exorcist movie with my best friend and former bridesmaid, Viri. (Her fiance Juan and I refused to go see it. We don’t do well with horror movies.) Jorge later told me it sucked.
One of my favorite.. shows is Survivor. I just got hooked on it earlier this year. I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet, so no spoilers please!
Weekend Plans..

None yet! 🙂

Too Young to Invest?

An acquaintance of mine is selling plots of land a few hours from Cancun, about 15 miles inland from the Mayan ruins of Tulum.

It’s cheap (about $12,000 USD total), the monthly payments are pretty easy, and the properties are big at 2.5 acres.

Negatives: It’s out in the middle of nowhere. I doubt there are any utilities out there at the moment, although who knows in a few years.

The city of Tulum is working on getting approval to build an international airport in the next few years, which could make this an amazing investment.

I dunno. This would be a much easier decision if we had more money.

What would we do with it? Hmmm, nothing right now. In a few years, either build on it or sell.

Anyway, just an idea to toy around with. It would be really cool, but is investing a priority at 24 years old?

Special K and Me

I’m starting calorie counting again today.

For those of you who have been reading awhile, you may remember that I lost 10 pounds when I did this a few months ago. I’ve maintained the new weight, which is awesome, but I’ve reached a plateau.

I’m not that big, at 150 pounds (size 10/12), and I don’t feel fat at all. Still, I can’t deny that clothes don’t fit me the way they did a few years ago. I remember what it was like to be 125 pounds and be able to find cute shorts and tank tops that fit me… so here we go.

It’s frustrating to write down every single thing you eat, but  I’ll be darned if it doesn’t work!!

I bought lots of fruit and my Special K yesterday. Apparently they’ve changed it up a bit. Question: How am I supposed to “rediscover” a new cereal? If it’s new, I would be discovering it for the first time… not “rediscovering” it, right?

Maybe I’ve been working as a copy editor for too long. *sigh* To be fair, the new flavor of Special K is pretty awesome.

Any extra advice is very welcome!

How to Speak Like a Mexicano: American Slang Part 2

Saw this at Malecon Americas mall yesterday…

Come "shopping" and now "eating", too

If you’re not sure about the English usage here, check out my previous post from a few months ago:

How to Speak Like a Mexicano: American Slang

This is a perfect example of the popularity of the English word “shopping” here in Mexico. Unfortunately, they decided to be creative and throw in the word “eating” as well.

It’s so bad, it’s almost physically painful.

I love you Shakey’s, but I just might have to boycott you after this.

Missing October

The weather in Cancun has been gorgeous lately. Cool, slightly crisp air, and less humidity, making it feel *almost* like fall. Sometimes I can smell just  a hint of something on the breeze that takes me back.

Fall has always been my favorite season, but I haven’t seen classic autumn weather in more than 5 years. I really, really miss it right now.

So today’s post is dedicated to fall … because palm trees are amazing, but I miss Virginia’s colors.

Just Thursday

Oh my goodness! Is it really Just Thursday again? If you want to play along, make sure to link up at Murdock’s Mama! (just click the button)

Outside my window.. sunny! Finally! We’ve had some nasty looking grayness from Hurricane Paula the last few days. Welcome back, sunshine!

The time is.. 9:21 am
Today I feel.. ready to work! but still a bit sick. I’ve moved on from congestion and snot into the hacking cough phase. That means the end is near! Woohoo!
I am thinking.. that my keyboard is REALLY dirty and I have no idea how to clean it.
At the moment, I am thankful.. for a great family weekend in Vegas, and for a new brother-in-law.
I am going.. to Jorge’s soccer match tonight.
I am wearing.. my work uniform. Blaaaaaaaah
I wish.. I had living room furniture. All in good time, I guess! I want it to look like this some day (stolen from Nikki at Que Sera Sera way back in April!). Loooove those navy striped curtains!
I am reading.. They Came to Baghdad by Agatha Christie (I gave up on Book of the Dead… it got kinda boring and annoying.)
I am working on.. some translations at work.
I am hoping.. for world peace.
I am hearing.. general office chit chat.
I bet you didn’t know.. that I got Jergen’s Natural Glow Gradual Tanner on my trip to Vegas! Beautiful, moisturized, sunkissed, glowing skin will soon be mine!

This will be me in a week.

One of my favorite.. things is Kleenex ColdCare tissues. You have saved my nose!
Weekend Plans.. nothing yet! My weekend plans aren’t usually as detailed as Abby’s because here in Mexico we usually play it by ear 🙂
