Lately I’ve been seeing a few blogs and forums talking about this, and yesterday I got a comment asking about it, so this weekend, ya’ll get to hear about…
Our cost of living in Cancun!
Jorge and I probably live more expensively than most people here my age, but much, much cheaper than others. (We spend more than most people here make.)
Also keep in mind that Cancun, as a tourist destination, tends to be more expensive than other cities in Mexico.
Our Monthly Expenses (Pesos/approx US dollar amount)
Rent (3 bedroom , 2 bathroom house with small yard): $4500/$360
Water bill: $50/$4
Sky (satellite TV): $280/$23
Cell phones: $300/$24
Groceries: $800/$64 (varies)
Expenses (taxis and buses to work/school, lunch every day for both, outings with friends, takeout): $7200/$576 ($1800/$144 a week)
Extras (dog grooming, gas tank refill for the stove, special outings, etc): $500/$40
Total: $13,180 pesos / $1,054 US Dollars
Kinda scary to see it all laid out like that!
Not nearly as inexpensive as Leslie Limon! Lucky.
How does yours compare?
Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve done a “How to Speak like a Mexicano” post!!
A pretty well-known local gym uses this to advertise its classes:
In case you couldn’t figure it out, this gym offers stripping classes.
Here in Mexico, the word for stripper is “stripper”. (I love how they choose English to describe the more vulgar and shallow things in life. Very smart on their part.)
However, with Spanish pronunciation, the word is pronounced more like “eh-STREE-per”. Since they use the long “ee” sound to pronounce it here in Mexico, I guess the owners of this gym assumed strip was spelled with a “ee”. Good intentions. Bad follow-through.
Once in Acapulco, I saw it advertised as “strep dancing”. Kudos on getting closer to the correct pronunciation… but naming a dance after an illness is definitely not sexy.
Can you spot the other mistake on this ad?
Also… can anyone tell me what “gap” is?
Thursday is now one of my fave days of the week. Why? Because it’s Just Thursday with Murdock’s Mama! Click on the button and link up if you want to join along!
Outside my window..kinda weird… it’s sunny, but there are lots of cloud out, so it looks kinda gray.
Tony and Cheri at Luna Blue express what expats in the Riviera Maya are all thinking… please check it out.
Mexico is NOT a War Zone
Great facts, impressive numbers, and real feelings. I almost cried.
If you have comments, please leave them on Luna Blue’s site.
Saludos a todos!
It’s Sunday night, and tomorrow will be busy at work, so I’ll go ahead and leave you with my favorite movie character crushes of all time.
Rent the movies, and thank me later.
And everyone’s favorite…
Who do you think is the hottest movie character ever??
Went to Jorge’s soccer game last night.
My friend Viri went to the restroom, then came out and told me she “wanted to show me something”.
Went into the ladies’ room and saw this:
I was so sure it was a fake plastic bug… until it moved its back legs and did this:
**Note: Viri refused to put her hand up to it for size comparison. Can’t blame her. I tried to keep the second image true to size… about the length of 1.5 average-size index fingers. GAH!
**Extra note: Just found out this is a locust.
Remember Monday when I posted about our weekend at Sandos Caracol EcoResort and Spa?
Today I’m going to show you our room! It was simple, yet cheerful. I loved the layout, and someday would like to have a Master Suite with a similar one.
Anyway, the coolest part of the room was right by the door…
In order to turn the power on for the room, you had to insert your room card into a slot. What does that mean? That when you’re not in the room, everything is turned off. Love that idea!!!!
The hotel is also undergoing renovations on the guestrooms in order to (1) make them more fabulous and (2) make them some of the region’s most ecofriendly rooms. Good job, Sandos Caracol.
It’s that time of the week again! Just Thursday with Murdock’s Mama! If you want to join in, click on the badge and link up!
Outside my window.. Today’s view, lots of wispy clouds and sunshine, but for some reason the hotel zone looks dark…
The time is.. 9:17
Today I feel.. frustrated because one of the dogs chewed up my somewhat expensive beach dress… and there’s no way of knowing which one it was. I know who I suspect it was, though…
I am thinking.. how much work I can get done today
At the moment, I am thankful.. for air conditioning
I am going..to go out to lunch with coworkers today. Where will it be?
I am wearing..my ugly, ugly work uniform
I wish..I could stretch my money more
I am reading..Book of the Dead by Patricia Cornwell. Dang, that woman has a sick, sick mind.
I am working on..learning to cook! It usually goes better when Jorge helps.
I am hoping..to be back here soon:
I am hearing..the voices of my desk neighbors chatting
I bet you didn’t know.. that Jorge and I are kinda hooked on Parental Control on MTV. We’re so lame.
