Ek' Balam Mayan Ruins in Yucatan

This weekend, my in-laws took us to see some Mayan ruins along with some family friends. It was an AMAZING time!

We went to Ek’ Balam (which means “Black Jaguar” in Mayan), a site located about 2 hours from Cancun, near the city of Valladolid in the state of Yucatan.

Words are insufficient, so I’ll just leave you with photos…

There are 2 hills like this. Each has a large, unearthed acropolis underneath.

The ball court:

The main acropolis… 106 stairs. I got halfway up and panicked. Luckily Jorge made it all the way and was able to take photos.

Beautifully preserved carvings at the entrance to a tomb:

And finally… Pepino the snake.

  1. It seriously makes me nervous to see you stand on the edge of that thing! I’ll have to forward this to my friend. She’s heading to Isla Mujeres and wanted to visit some ruins and I thought Chichen Itza was a bit of jaunt.

  2. Oooooh… I love Mayan ruins! One time we went to visit Coba and that pyramid is HUGE. I got all the way to the top, but it wasn’t easy. And those steps aren’t “normal” sized steps. They’re fairly oversized and steep, so it’s really scary.

Love the snake photo op! πŸ™‚

  3. These are amazing! I love snakes as well they’re so funny!

As for BNTM – CHARLOTTE’S GONE!!!!! She was my favourite by about 10000 miles! And she’s gone! Boooo….

Think Joy is gross – too skinny. And Tiff’s voice annoys me to no end!

    • I’m ok with that… She was my absolute favorite, but she’s just not a model. She’ll so much better as a TV personality or an actress.

Tiff’s voice annoyed me til I found out she’s foreign (can’t remember from where, though). can’t stand Joy. Go Alisha!

  4. Are the stairs really narrow like most ancient sites? I always think about how tiny people’s feet were way back when and how much bigger humans are getting.

  5. OMG…yes, no snakey snake for me merci beaucoup!!!

Otherwise, very cool pics!! Did you guys get a chance to check out Vallodolid? Err…maybe you have tons of times, but what a cute little place , eh!!!

  7. Very, very cool. And you’re so brave with that snake. An old friend of mine had a Boa and that was only a baby but I still needed to be coaxed into holding it. Haha.
