The Bikini Bizz

So this morning I was reading over at MeanBean’s blog. She has a business on Etsy making these cute little handmade bags. Today, she wrote about a book that has helped to motivate her lately.

Last year, during my last semester of university, everyone had to make up a business plan. Mine was a bikini business. I even found a friend to put together a few of the bathing suits I’d designed in order to help my presentation. I figured out how I would sell them and where and to whom. I even toyed around with the idea of opening up the business for real.

I looked into it a bit, and it requires a whole lot of permits, plus figuring out how I would get the product to customers if they ordered online, plus in Cancun there aren’t very many good fabrics, plus who would make all these suits? I felt very limited, and I kind of gave up before I even started.

But maybe I wasn’t as limited as I thought. I usually have a good idea of what people like in terms of style. AND I live in CANCUN for goodness sake. Could there possibly be a better market in the world for selling bathing suits?

A year later, I’m still left with the “what ifs” of it all. Why didn’t I continue? Was I too scared? Too lazy?

Do you have anything like this going on? Anything you were too scared to try?

  1. You’re right. Perfect market! I have a similar dream that involves large start up costs. But if you never take the risk, or make a business plan. How will you know if your dream is possible?

  2. don’t look at this past year as a missed chance – look at it as the incubation period, where you’ve let your idea simmer in your brain. You’re right, you have a great built in market, you can always outsource the actual creation of the bikinis if needed, etc. You have The Idea, run with it!

  3. Don’t give up on your idea! I think it’s a fantastic one and that you should keep thinking on it!

I also had a business idea my sister and I were throwing around…but now with the kids being so young, it’s just not the right time. It’s just sitting there…brewing…and getting better and more comprehensive 🙂

  4. I had no idea that you designed swimsuits! I definitely wouldn’t give up on it. You are in the perfect place for something like that!

I am sort of mulling a business idea around in my head right now, but I don’t know how it will work out.

  5. Do you know how many times I think up these things!!!

My hubby is an accountant here in Cancun, and he also runs a family business…. the work that goes into it is outrageous…. maybe that´s why I haven´t done anything with my ideas yet!!

you know amazon started in a garage!! I know the owners of the largest swimwear store in Canada and their mother started it in their basement!!! You could sooo do it here!!! Good luck amiga!!

  6. You really should give the Bikini Bizz another thought! I mean, really! You do live in Cancun, one of the major Bikini capitals of the world. 🙂 I’m sure your business will be a HUGE success.

  7. All the time! To believe in yourself and your dreams (especially when it comes to investing a chunk of money in it) takes a lot of courage! Is there a way you can start off small to test the market? Maybe try to sell your bathing suits to beach stores by consignment first or selling them on etsy. Living in Cancun, you do have a perfect market. Maybe you could also have an angle that might make it more original and attractive to tourists & locals– local flavored Mexican/Cancun style designs… maybe have some fun and use some of those Mexican words for labels of types of women that might wear them. Ha ha… Don’t give up on the idea tho– the biggest hurdle will be your fear & what ifs. Find a way to get beyond that & the rest will be cake!
