Cancun Interactive Aquarium: I Pet a Shark!!!

Last weekend, a bunch of Jorge’s family came into town for his parents’ vow renewal. On Sunday, we went out to Plaza La Isla just to hang out. While there, we came across the Interactive Aquarium.

At the entrance, they have a tank that always has some poor soul swimming in it while trying to draw in customers. (Someone drew the short straw.)

For $90 pesos a person (group rate), I decided to go in and explore with all Jorge’s cousins while the boring adults stayed outside and waited.

In the first room, we came across some tiny jellyfish and seahorses.

Then, we made our way outside, where there was an open tank filled with sea turtles, rays and nurse sharks.

Oh my gosh! I pet a shark! Like for an extended period of time! The staff member held the shark against the tank for us. It felt like wet, rubbery sand paper.

Conversation between me and the staff member:

Me: Does it bite?

Guy: Yes.

Me: Oh…

Guy: But if I’m holding it, you’re fine.

Me: Sweet. Have you been bitten?

Guy: Yes.

Me: Does it hurt?

Guy: *Shows me massive scar on hand* Just a bit.

Dolphins were there! You can catch the dolphin shows, but we were there way early for that.

The lion fish… grrrrrr. (I understand these fishies were brought to the area from the Pacific. Since then, they’ve kind of taken over and have negatively affected the other ocean wildlife. They sure are pretty, though.)

Shark tank!!!

“Oh, cool! Look at that shark! He’s right up by the glass. I wonder if he can see m… WHAT IS THAT MONSTER NEXT TO IT??”

Going to an aquarium with 6 kids under 14 years old is awesome. Just sayin.

Have you ever petted a crazy animal? What’s the craziest animal you’ve ever seen?

  1. Cool aquarium!

The strangest animal I have ever seen was at Serpent Safari in Chicago. They had an albino alligator and an albino iguana. They also had a 150+ year old alligator snapping turtle that had been found in a Louisiana Bayou with a civil war bullet embedded in its shell. How crazy is that??!!

  2. ha! i love the conversation you had with the handler guy! sounds like a lot of fun, though- how cool is to say that you’ve pet a shark?!

  3. You are one brave woman. I don’t care if its a nurse shark or not, you couldn’t get me to pet it with a 1,000 ft pole. No way.

That is a pretty cool aquarium though.

  4. I love aquariums! When Scott and I went to Belize for our 5 year wedding anniversary, we snorkeled with nursed sharks and sting rays and were able to touch both of them as they swam around our feet. Yikes!

  5. It would be so neat (to me, at least) to be the person in the tank with the fish.

I’ve petted the sharks and sting rays at the local aquarium and it’s so neat!

  6. I’ve actually caught a nurse shark once while fishing. It probably wasn’t as big as the Carribbean breed, but still scary.

I was in 6th grade and in a little fishing boat with my friends cousins who we later found out were drunk, and the kept telling me not to let go of the fishing rod. When it came out of the water we all freaked out and the line broke.

  7. omg! you’re brave!

I went swimming with the dolphins once over at Isla Mujeres… THAT was the most amazing experience I’ve EVER had…

We caught a Rooster Fish once, deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys… that was pretty crazy looking.

  8. i got to pet a shark once! when we went to disney world and one of their aquatic parks, remember? i spent a large part of the day going through the snorkeling thing over and over again. i’m sure i was not supposed to touch the shark, but i did. sharks need love too.

  9. Wow! I thought my experience was cool, but ya’ll seem to have outdone me. At least I got a picture!

Sarah – Yeah, at Typhoon Lagoon! I think I went through the shark tank once and kinda freaked out haha. (Spent the rest of the day on the Lazy River.) Sharks do need love. I’m sure they appreciated it. Miss you, sister!

  10. Oh I LOVE sharks! Don’t tiny jellyfish look so cute when they can’t sting you? It’s amazing how I’ll go ‘ooh!’ at them for ages in an aquarium, but the minute I see one in the sea next to me I scream like a mad thing and practically run on the surface of the sea to get away from it…

Also that fish there at the end?

U.G.L.Y. You ain’t got no alibi YOU UGLY! EH EH! YOU UGLY!
